Extremely Busy.

I have been really  extremely busy the last few days! It’s the end of the semester for me 🙂 2 1/2 weeks left!

But with the end of the semester comes loads of homework, group projects, final projects, and then finals.

It’s difficult to get this all done with limited time because I’ve started my internship early, and am working 2 positions! I would normally not like to make busyness an excuse, but this time it’s overwhelmed me.

I’m working on a post about social media, training, and the conference I was at on Friday 🙂 I also have some more topics to add that are in the works and an upcoming trip to Nashville. 🙂 Stay tuned!

It was finally sunny & warm.

There you have it, in Toledo, OH on April 10, 2011 it was finally sunny and warm. 🙂 It was a sunny 83 degrees outside. Where did that come from?! Who knows! But I took advantage of it.

I was able to get to Wildwood, our local wildlife preserve park and running trails to take on 6 miles! 🙂 I took this as a slower run, because I’ve been having hamstring-tendinitis problems. But I was able to run, walk and stretch in the hour or so I was out there!

Terrible of me to forget my camera on such an amazing day! But imagine gorgeous walking, running, bike trails and a million people! I mean, EVERYONE was out!

After my run, it was home in time for some lunch, then back to Starbucks for homework. I will say, I was so proud of myself that I got one of these:

Rock Road Cake Pop!! ❤

Fast forward to the night… Andrew & I were awaken to the sounds of glass shattering. We were both so startled, we thought someone had broken in. He pounded on our wall to wake up our other roommate. The only thing that caused, was this photo falling on my head.

Why yes, that is a canvas print that preceded to pop me in the head. Didn’t feel to good either. After some looking outside, and trying to figure out if someone was in the house, we yelled to our roommate. It was his mirror that fell and shattered into a million pieces. And that was our intruder. Glass.

Add that, to me not being able to sleep, and then over sleeping my alarm. It wasn’t too bad of a day. I found out some really great news!

Stay tuned, I *may* just be moving up my graduation date! Which means a lot of excitement, a lot of school work, and a lot of job searching!

>Speaking in Public.

>I just learned today that I will be getting the opportunity through my internship (at the Health Department) to teach a course overview of disaster services to groups of employees throughout the Health Department. I was originally asked to do one course, but when I learned about the program and I would get the chance to let other people know who I am, I immediately jumped to do three courses! I’m changing around my work schedule at my current job to fit it in.

This got me thinking about the fear most people have against public speaking. When I was younger, I used to get so nervous before presentations and papers, that I physically wasn’t able to get the words out. I used to have to make sure I had everything word for word written down & practiced. I’ve since then gotten over that fear, and just make sure I know what I’m talking about. Depending on the topic, I may want to have a layout in my head, but other than that, I just go with it!
I’ve compiled a list of tips that think would be appropriate to public speaking. Let me know if you have any suggestions!
  1. Know Your Material – This is the most important. You have to know what you’re talking about. And it’s also easiest if you enjoy your topic!
  2. Practice – They always say, Practice makes perfect right? This is especially good if it’s a topic you’re not familiar with.
  3. Know your surroundings – This could be the location, the people, and just what’s around you. Know how to work the computer (if you need one) and where everything is at you will need. It’s also best to get to know some people. You’ll be able to get through to them if you’ve made a connection with them.
  4. Relax – I need to tell myself this all the time. When you’re calm you’re more like to just breeze through and not make a mistake!
  5. Be confident – The same with relax. Exhibit confidence and know that you can do this. The words will just flow.
Well, those are my tips! I’m sure there are a lot more out there!
This will be great for me, because it will allow me to gain EXPERIENCE
After all, isn’t that what is super important in the working world?!
Are there any types of public speaking that scares you? Do you have any tips?

>It’s Been A While.

>Why Yes, I feel utterly ashamed that it has been since September since I last blogged! To be honest, life got away with me! I can certainly catch you up on all the things that have happened since then …

I’m heavily into my Graduate Degree in the MPH Program. (I’m getting my Masters in Public Health Administration) I love this program, and the career outlook is great! This semester I’m taking 4 classes (Public Health Issues, Public Health Behavior & Theory, Epidemiology, and Public Health Management).

I’m still working Full-Time at my current job at a Graphic Arts firm. I’m doing all their Marketing, Customer Service, Administration, HR, and about a million other “hats”.

I’m also interning at our local Health Department in the Community Preparedness & Response Department. I LOVE it. 🙂 It’s literally the highlight of my day. I’m there 3 days a week for 12 hours, and then I leave to go to my current position, and some nights then on to class.

In January, I ran the WDW Half Marathon. I spent all last fall/winter training for the Half and was finally able to run it! It was an amazing experience, but sadly I ran with the flu & a cold. Needless to say, my training time of 2 hours 10 minutes did not happen. I finished in just under 2 hours 40 minutes. But the receiving that medal felt the same either way! Did I forget to mention I ran the Buzz & Woody’s Best Friends 5K the day before? This was my second 5K to date and I finished in under 30 minutes.

(I apologize for the awful medal photos. They were taken from my Android!)
The biggest change in my life is meeting the love of my life Andrew Weber
We met at Starbucks. 🙂 He’s a pro sports photographer and leads a crazy, exciting life. This sadly translates to a lot of travel, and a lot of alone time for me. It’s all worth it though. He has a great job. We’ve recently (January) moved into a house with a few friends. It’s me, and 3 guys in one house. I get a lot of questions about it, but it’s actually really great.
Well, I am off to finish a paper on Cholera. I am making a serious effort to post MUCH more often!

>My Running Slump is Over.

>Do you ever just have those days that you really want to do well with your run, you really want to give it your all, but your just not there. You’re sick. You’re tired. You’re mentally beat up. You doubt yourself. And then like that. It’s over. You’ve driven yourself into a such a slump that you can’t even back peddle out of it. You’re heart still wants to complete that run, but your head has one the battle. Don’t let it win the war.

That’s what I’ve been telling myself the last few weeks. I’ve been sick, run down, and just mentally not in it. This morning I finally broke free. I woke up feeling ill. My sinuses we’re draining and my stomach was upset. I laid in bed a few extra minutes, and then decided it was time to get a move on. It was 4:50 am, and the day wasn’t waiting for me to start.

I decided to take a different approach this morning when I went to the gym. Instead of running upstairs on the treadmill staring at the dark sky out the window, I would run in the Cardio Cinema. As luck would have it, this was playing.

Just the movie I wanted to see!! I was talking about it last night with Emily & Jason, amongst many other films particularly Sci-Fi related. I’ve become a Syfy channel addict. I started off at walk just to get warmed up. Legs were feeling good and everything was going great, so I decided to start off at a jog. I made it a half mile before I even realized it and knew it was time to up the speed. The movie was so good, the 5 miles were over before I knew it. I slowed a few times for water and did a short walk at the end. How refreshing that I had a great run in before 7 am 🙂
